What is Palladium?

October 1, 2011

Despite it’s recent surge in popularity, palladium is not a new finding, by any means. In fact, it has been around since 1803, when it was discovered by William Hyde Wollaston. While it is mainly associated with fine jewelry, palladium is also used for things like electronics, dentistry, medicine, catalytic converters, fuel cells and even ground water treatment. Jewelers and craftsman have been using palladium, in limited applications, since 1939. However, it took a long time to reach the mainstream, because it was difficult to work with. Recently, a new palladium alloy was developed and evolved into what is referred to as 950 Palladium.

So, Exactly What is Palladium?Palladium is a naturally lustrous, silvery-white metal that is ninety-five percent pure, with only traces of other metals. This makes it ideal for those with allergic tendencies. Other metals must be alloyed with nickel or other elements to achieve rich color tones and shine. Since palladium does not, it is hypoallergenic. These same natural components also eliminate tarnishing, thus cutting down on maintenance. To keep it looking like new, just use a soft-bristle brush and some mild detergent or heavily diluted ammonia to touch it up. Take extra precautions if the piece has other elements like pearls or silver. When purchasing palladium pieces, inquire about proper cleaning procedures.

Although it looks like platinum, palladium is significantly less expensive. This makes it affordable for most consumers. In addition, palladium weights much less than platinum, so jewelry designers can be more creative, bold and daring. There is no need to worry that large, chunky earrings or a thick necklace will be too heavy. Another advantage to palladium is that the light weight actually belies the strength. It is much stronger and more durable than gold or silver. Palladium is an ideal choice for wedding rings, due to the durability, beauty, light weight and low cost. Because they are worn every day, they must be able to stand up to excessive wear and the elements. Also, palladium can be set with any type of diamonds, gemstones or pearls.

Anyone who finds a piece of platinum jewelry that they absolutely love, but simply cannot afford, should consider having it replicated in palladium. If someone comes across a photograph of a gorgeous necklace or they see a piece of jewelry that is out of their price range, they can seek out a talented artisan to reproduce it in palladium. This can be done with any type of jewelry, be it a necklace, bracelet, earrings or ring. It is a particularly excellent idea for engagement rings and wedding bands. As the buying public continues to gain a deeper awareness of the benefits of palladium, it’s popularity is expected to soar.
